The streamer has ordered a pilot for the new multi-camera comedy "Mid-Century Modern" by David Kohan and Max Mutchnick, both of whom are behind the hit program "Will & Grace." The series stars Matt Bomer, Nathan Lane, and Linda Lavin and is lined up for an exciting, gender-swapped take in the likeness of the classic "The Golden Girls." Ryan Murphy serves as an executive producer, with veteran director James Burrows attached to helm the pilot.
It's based on the show's premise: three long-time friends, middle-aged gay men who, after a sudden death, decide to spend their retirement years together in Palm Springs. They take up residence in the wealthy friend's—Bunny Schneiderman's—Nathan Lane, dementedly over-the-top estate, inhabited by his mother, Sybil, played by Linda Lavin, and their strange Gen Z housekeeper who prefers to work au naturel. This found family moves through life head-on, their enduring friendships getting them through every up and down—although their quick-witted comedic repartee might say otherwise.
Matt Bomer plays Jerry Frank, who is "pure of heart, hard of body, and soft of head." A third friend and a housekeeper round out this improbable quintet of friends and confidantes.
Known from "Fellow Travelers" and "American Horror Story," Bomer recently starred in the "Will & Grace" revival and worked with Ryan Murphy on "The Normal Heart."
Nathan Lane is hot off the press, coming off his turn as Dominick Dunne for Murphy's next Netflix series, "Monster." For his last turn in Hulu's "Only Murders in the Building," he received critical acclaim. Linda Lavin brings her decades of experience to the role of Sybil Schneiderman; her credits include CBS' "Elsbeth" and "B Positive.".
From 20th Television, "Mid-Century Modern" is a heartwarming bromance infused with comedic flair courtesy of executive producers Murphy, Kohan, Mutchnick, Lane, Bomer, and Burrows.
